Mass RMV restoring license reminders service

Updated October 7, 2009

Mass. RMV restoring license-reminder service

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles is restoring its license renewal reminder service.

Mailed reminders are being replaced with electronic reminders sent by e-mail, text message or phone message.

Reminder service was dropped last November, saving the RMV $800,000 in mailing and other costs. But drivers complained about being unaware of expiring licenses, causing problems during traffic stops and at airport security checkpoints.

The new reminder service is being run by Sendza Inc., although Registry officials insist the Marlborough firm will not have access to any personal information.

Drivers must sign up at least 45 days before the expiration of their license or Massachusetts ID. They will then receive a reminder at least 30 days before the expiration date.
